Thomas J. Davies was born at Summer Hill, a property in South Carolina across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia. He served as a staff officer in the Confederate States Army and helped develop the kaolin mining industry in Aiken County, S.C., after the Civil War. James Henry Hammond (1807-1864) was a lawyer and planter, and an early advocate of nullification and secession. He was Democratic governor of South Carolina for the period 1842 to 1844, and was a U.S. Senator, for the period 1857 to 1860. As a senator he began to doubt the wisdom of secession.
